Eidos Montréal, the acclaimed game development studio, has initiated a new round of layoffs, affecting 124 employees. The company confirmed the reductions on LinkedIn, citing “changes in project needs” as the reason, which impacted both production and support teams.
Concurrently with the layoffs, David Anfossi, the long-standing head of the studio, has announced his departure. Anfossi dedicated nearly two decades to the company, having served as a producer for the critically acclaimed Deus Ex: Human Revolution and held the leadership role since 2013. Eidos Montréal expressed gratitude for Anfossi’s substantial contributions and outlined plans for a smooth transition to new leadership.
These recent staff reductions follow previous layoffs in December 2023, which were linked to the cancellation of a new game set in the Legacy of Kain universe. It remains unclear whether the current wave of dismissals is directly related to those earlier cuts or represents a fresh phase of restructuring.
In recent years, Eidos Montréal has faced challenges in launching major new projects. Their last game developed entirely in-house, Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy (2021), garnered high praise from critics. Following its release, the studio contributed to the development of Fable, but further layoffs occurred approximately one year ago, in March, after the completion of that contract.
