The latest update for the mobile gacha game Duet Night Abyss delivered an unexpected and rather unpleasant ‘gift’ to its players, causing a significant security concern.
Recently, the studio responsible for developing Duet Night Abyss reported a serious cybersecurity incident. As a result of a sophisticated hacker attack, malicious software was inadvertently distributed to users’ computers through a released game update.
According to the official statement from the developers:
The root cause of this incident was a malicious attack originating from a specific region, targeting our internal office systems and active servers. Even after the initial breach, persistent attempts to continue the attack persisted. We strongly condemn these actions. Security is a fundamental pillar of any functioning product, and this incident served as a serious call to action for our team.
This intrusive malware possessed a wide range of espionage capabilities, including the ability to read webcam activity, capture screenshots, intercept user passwords, and steal sensitive information directly from browsers.
In response to the incident, the creators of Duet Night Abyss promptly released a corrective patch to mitigate the threat and issued a public apology for the security lapse. As a gesture of reconciliation and compensation, all affected players have been offered free in-game pulls (gacha rolls).
The player community has expressed profound outrage over what transpired. Many are actively urging the development studio to immediately invest in strengthening their cybersecurity systems and hire highly qualified specialists to prevent similar, potentially devastating incidents from recurring in the future.
