Whispers of a monumental acquisition are sweeping through the industry: Disney is reportedly setting its sights on Epic Games. While the creators of the immensely popular game Fortnite have long prided themselves on independence, recent financial challenges could make them a prime target for the entertainment titan. Following its historic acquisitions of Pixar, Marvel, and Lucasfilm, Disney appears poised to make a significant move into the gaming sector.

According to tech reporter Alex Heath, as cited by GameSpot, a faction within Disney’s senior leadership is demonstrating serious intent to acquire Epic Games. This interest comes at a critical time for Epic, which recently announced the layoff of over 1,000 employees amid declining Fortnite revenues and a strategic need to reduce operating costs.

“I know for a fact that senior Disney managers want to buy Epic Games and are just waiting for the right moment. I think if Epic ever sold, if they decided to give up their independence, Disney would be the most natural home for them for many reasons.”

Kevin Mayer, a former Disney executive and ex-CEO of TikTok, also believes in the strategic merit of such a deal, stating:

“Epic or another asset from the gaming industry would be an excellent addition to The Walt Disney Company’s resources.”

A pivotal figure in this potential development is Josh D’Amaro, Disney’s current head, who is known for his keen interest in gaming. He previously oversaw a substantial $1.5 billion investment in Epic Games, designated for collaborative projects within Fortnite. These combined indicators strongly suggest Disney’s aggressive intent to significantly expand its footprint in the video game world.
