Director of New Resident Evil Film Prepares for Fan Backlash Over Unique Approach

Zach Cregger openly states that his creative vision for the film may provoke a strong negative reaction from the audience.

In an interview with The New York Times, Zach Cregger, director of the new Resident Evil adaptation, admitted that he anticipates a negative reaction from fans due to deviations from the original lore. He foresees that a portion of the audience will “crucify” him for his creative choices.

“I like the idea of confronting a world obsessed with wanting to destroy you. It’s just fun, and I haven’t seen a film that offers a similar experience,” Zach Cregger stated.

Cregger has not specified the extent to which the script deviates from the original material. He previously mentioned that the film would not be a literal adaptation of Capcom’s games but would preserve the fundamental principles of the universe. The precise line between a free interpretation and respect for canon remains unclear. Nevertheless, the director emphasizes that he is a long-time fan of the series and aims to convey the authentic feeling of the games.

It was previously reported that the film’s events will unfold between Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3, but the storyline will be entirely new, featuring original characters. The script, co-written by Cregger and Shay Hatten, tells the story of a courier who finds himself at the epicenter of a viral outbreak after making a delivery to Raccoon City Hospital.

An earlier leaked script hinted at an abundance of absurd and comedic moments. Those who reviewed it suggested the film might lean towards dark comedy, although this information has not been officially confirmed.

The main roles are played by Austin Abrams, Kali Reis, and Paul Walter Hauser. The global premiere is scheduled for September 18, 2026.
