After receiving several patches, Crimson Desert has garnered significant praise from players. However, even those content with the game frequently point out its deliberately unhurried initial pace. This particular aspect caught the eye of Dinga Bakaba, the director of Arkane Lyon studio and creator of the critically acclaimed Dishonored series. He shared his perspective, suggesting that beneath its familiar exterior, the game offers a truly novel experience.
Bakaba finds Crimson Desert’s structural progression to be a fascinating departure from most games. He elaborates on this unique approach:
“It’s intriguing how Crimson Desert operates in reverse compared to most games of its type. Usually, the beginning feels magical, but over time, you start to notice the underlying mechanisms: ‘ah, this is similar to that other game,’ ‘this part will likely repeat,’ and so on. But with Crimson Desert, it’s different – from the outset, it seems to openly display its core gameplay. The inspirations, controls, and systems are what you first encounter. Yet, after some dedicated time, all of this fades into the background; a true sense of magic emerges, and it persists because you’ve already internalized its foundational rules and elements.”
Dinga draws a parallel between Crimson Desert and tabletop games, where initially, one sees only the board and rules. However, once truly immersed in the “magic circle,” the real enjoyment begins. He notes that Crimson Desert gradually unfolds: it doesn’t reveal all its layers at once, but rather consistently introduces new elements, deepens the meaning of existing systems, and encourages their intricate interaction.
The developer praised the game’s systems as “rich” and “naturally integrated into the game world,” observing that Pearl Abyss occasionally allows for “tonal liberties with (cleverly designed) fun.” Bakaba concludes that this cumulative effect creates a “unique gaming journey: transforming from a game into an experience of magic and discovery.”
Dinga speculates that this distinct design fosters a profound sense of satisfaction for players, stemming from overcoming the game’s challenges and uncovering its secrets. He highlights its refreshing contrast in today’s gaming landscape:
“Perhaps that’s why many feel that the time invested in Crimson Desert is truly rewarding and leaves a ‘personal’ impression. In an era of rapid consumption, it’s a pleasure to encounter a game that ‘hooks’ players not by yielding to them, but by offering resistance.”
