Pearl Abyss has rolled out significant updates to Crimson Desert since its launch, notably improving the item storage system. Initially, players faced inventory challenges due to the inability to store equipment in chests, a serious problem with limited inventory space. Developers have since refined the user interface, controls, and strategically re-evaluated fast travel points across the expansive map, distributing them more logically. These are just initial steps in an ongoing development process.
These enhancements have been met with a positive reception from the player base, reflected in Crimson Desert’s Metacritic user score. It now stands as the second-highest-rated new game of 2026 by users, boasting an average of 8.8/10. This places it ahead of Pokemon Pokopia (8.5/10) and only behind Resident Evil Requiem (9.4/10).
In contrast, critical reception has been less stellar, with an average score of 7.7/10 and placing 48th in the year’s rankings. However, it’s important to note that critics reviewed an earlier build, prior to the release of significant March patches that addressed many of the initial issues.
Both players and critics concur on one major flaw: the narrative is disappointing. An interview with the voice actor for Cliff revealed insights into this issue, suggesting the plot underwent numerous chaotic modifications over years of development, with significant changes implemented even in the final moments before launch.
