Capcom has outlined its official position on the use of generative artificial intelligence, confirming that while it plans to leverage AI for streamlining development, it will not incorporate AI-generated assets directly into its games. This clarification came during an investor briefing held in February, where the company responded to shareholder questions regarding its AI strategy.
A company statement emphasized, “Our company does not plan to use materials created with generative AI in games. However, in the future, we intend to actively apply this technology to improve development efficiency and productivity.”
Capcom is currently experimenting with various applications of AI within its graphics, sound, and programming departments. The precise scope and scale of these implementations are still under evaluation.
Previously, Capcom’s Technical Director, Kazuki Abe, hinted at the potential of AI to optimize the ideation phase for creating in-game environmental objects. He noted that even minor elements often demand the conceptualization of “thousands and tens of thousands” of unique designs, making this a highly labor-intensive stage. The integration of generative AI is being considered as a method to accelerate this particular process, without affecting crucial aspects such as the narrative, character design, or core gameplay experience.
