Working on some of the biggest hits in the gaming industry isn’t always the dream it’s made out to be. Darenn Keller, a former Ubisoft employee and developer on the Assassin’s Creed series, has shared that his tenure at the massive corporation was an “overwhelming and regrettable life experience.”
Keller decided to shed light on his reasons for leaving the world of large-scale gaming. He candidly described himself as “a tiny, utterly insignificant cog in an incredibly vast, soulless machine for creating AAA games.”
He regretfully noted that, as an individual contributor, he possessed “absolutely no influence on the final form of the market product.” According to Keller, this profound sense of powerlessness and professional burnout effectively extinguished his initial genuine artistic passion for the craft.
His salvation from this bleak state came through a bold resignation from his comfortable position and a swift transition to the indie market. Only by founding his own studio did he regain the freedom to make all decisions regarding his new products without stress.
This story reveals a poignant truth about modern gaming. Astronomical budgets and hundreds of employees often mean a complete loss of creative freedom, compelling top developers to flock towards smaller, author-driven, unrestricted projects.
