Despite ongoing debates about VRAM requirements, our comprehensive real-world testing indicates that graphics cards equipped with 8GB of video memory remain surprisingly capable for gaming well into 2026. This is good news for budget-conscious gamers looking for longevity from their current hardware.
However, the performance gap between 8GB and 16GB versions of various budget-friendly GPUs has proven to be unexpectedly significant. While 8GB cards certainly hold their own, especially when fine-tuning settings, the 16GB models consistently deliver a noticeably smoother experience and higher frame rates across a broader range of titles, particularly at higher resolutions or with more demanding graphical presets. This substantial performance uplift in the higher VRAM tier suggests a clear advantage for those prioritizing future-proofing and uncompromised visual fidelity.
Our test setup involved a selection of four budget graphics cards from different manufacturers, artfully arranged on a rustic wooden desk. An RGB-lit gaming keyboard and a gamepad were also visible, underscoring the gaming context of our evaluations.
